There will always be a debate, on whether to use text, or image links, as it relates to monitizing web content. The short answer is; text links will always fair better than image links. Here are two great reasons why.

Users are conditioned to click on links, when they are searching for additional information on a related topic. Links are easy to follow, can often be color matched to the scheme of the website, and are often less intrusive than image ads.

Image advertisements are great for the aestics of your website, but in general, users are aware that they are advertisements. Undoubtedly, users also feel as though there is an inherent risk, but clicking on image ads. There is one possible exception to the image, versus the text ad argument. Image ads that contain movie trailers, or videos, can yield a high return.

In short, image ads will typically fair better than image ads because they can be better targeted. Generally speaking, users are more likely to click on a text ad, as links are a normal part of search and find technique. You are much more likely to get get a better response from well placed link ads.
